The First Big Day...many more to come

Today was our first full day in Korea and it has been full indeed.
After a night of broken sleep we got up early to visit Naomi for the first time. We waited nervously for our social worker to make the last minute arrangements, then we took a long cab ride to Naomi's foster mother's apartment. Then on the 15th floor of a high rise in South Central Seoul we met our daughter for the first time. She is beautiful and tiny (only 15 lbs). When we got Josiah he was a month younger, but he was about 35% heavier.

We got to visit and ask lots of questions for about an hour before Naomi had to go to sleep. We learned that she is a mild mannered baby when she is up, but she does have some problem sleeping. She is usually awake from midnight to 6am. After this trip around the world and some of Josiah's recent wake-up times, I think that we have decided that sleep is over-rated.

When Naomi started to get fussy, her foster mother would step in to try and calm her. This feels strange to have someone reach out to take your baby because she is fussing. It makes your natural parental instincts say, "Hey, I am her Dad, I can handle this." But we experienced the exact same feelings when we got to hold Josiah for the first time and he cried a lot more. Today we learned that we will get Naomi for good on Monday at 11am.

On our long cab ride back to the guest house we alternated between feelings of happiness and Oh My Goodness ... This is really happening. No matter how deliberate a decision to become a parent may be, I don't think you ever feel that you are fully ready.

After returning to the guest house, we made a trip out to Walmart to pick up a few things, like the cable that we needed to download pictures to the computer. Well, we never found Walmart, but we did enjoy shopping at E-mart. It was right next to the ubiquitous Starbucks.

We then ventured into Itaewon, the heart of Seoul's tourist district. We spent time browsing the unique shops. We bought some Masks from a 90 year old shop owner who didn't mind mugging for the camera. After an long afternoon of browsing and turning down offers to have a custom tailored suit made for us, we ate traditional Korean barbecue at Don Valley restaurant. During our train ride back, we got to experience the Asian version of personal space, as we jammed into packed subways.

Enjoy the pictures and leave a comment for us.
Tomorrow promises to be another Big Day.

Could be a good thing :) #2 That food looks way better than what I had for dinner last night :) #3 The Korean gentleman looks like the teacher from Karate Kid with a beard! Ha Ha! We are praying for you and can't wait to meet her in person!---David and Tera

  10. Teresa and Greg, We are so happy for you guys. I can't wait to hear what Josiah has to say when he meets her for the first time. She is adorable. Let's see 15-20lbs for summer stuff...now we know what diaper size, too. That's helpful. I am so overwhelmed with emotion for your family....what a gift from God. You are really blessed. Get Home With Her!!!! We look forward to more pictures! Love, Tamara

  11. Wow, she is precious. I can not even comprehend the emotion. I am a little worried though. I am not sure that she is going to like the ROWDY Zoeller clan. We are so happy for you! Teresa, I continue to lift you up in prayer for all the things we talked about. I meant to tease you yesterday and tell you that if you had not spent the weekend being rowdy with us that you maybe could have remembered the cable.

By the way, the Korean food there looks better than the Mongolian Grill.

We look so forward to meeting "little" Naomi. You are a beautiful family of 4.

  12. I can hardly write this comment for flipping back to look at the pictures. You all look great! Josiah is going to have a blast...she looks a little spunky to me. Praying for good transitions and safe and restful travel. Hope to visit this summer...or maybe a Cincinnati Zoo trip with all the kids is on the horizon.

  13. I can't see to type after reading Josiah's note to you three. Josiah rocks! Hope it is ok that I sent one of the pics to a few people at work...we have never seen Greg with such an expression of being so happy that he could possibly bust. First Josiah outshines you in family pictures and now Naomi too! It is the price to pay for such beautiful children. You two are very cute, but you are not Josiah and Naomi. Prayers are being heard every day. Love reading all the updates! Have a terrific trip home. Vicki and Mickey

  16. Hi,
I'm so jealous. I've been reading your blog. Your daughter is so cute. I'm hoping that our daughter is coming home next week and one of the blue bags belongs to her, Claire Margaret. Claire (Sumi Gim) is our 4th child adopted from Korea. I've been a lurker on the board for 7+ years when we first began this process. We so wanted to travel this time, but my husband started a new job this fall and didn't have the vacation time. :-( It would be so amazing to see everything. Again, I'm jealous. Congratulations on your baby girl and best of luck on the transition home.
